Harbour View turn tide with late strikes
published: Saturday | November 24, 2007

LeVaughn Flynn, Staff Reporter

Three late goals by Harbour View against reigning champions Portmore United highlighted the second round of the Coca-Cola National Under-21 Premier Football League yesterday, leading the homesters to a 3-0 win at the Harbour View Mini Stadium.

In other games Village beat Sporting Central 2-0; Reno and August Town drew 0-0; Waterhouse blanked St. Georges 3-0; Arnett thumped Seba 4-0 and Boys' Town clipped Tivoli Gardens 1-0.

Harbour View earned their second win after clipping Boys' Town 1-0 last week, but a late flurry seemed unlikely as it was Portmore that was in attack mode. Lance Laing's cracker of a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box ripped through Portmore's poorly organised wall and into the back of the net in the 79th minute, shortly after Portmore had a couple of chances at goal.

"The goal came at a point when we were playing the better ball," said Portmore coach Christopher Bender. "We did not react well in setting up the wall."

Converted a penalty

Two minutes later Girvan Brown capitalised on Paul Grant's hard work for Harbour View's second goal. Grant made a telling run past several defenders and a sprawling goalkeeper before the ball casually rolled at Brown's feet for a cool conversion.

John Ross Edwards converted a penalty in the 90th minute after he watched his teammate, Andre Fagan, rashly brought down in the area by Andrew Mendez.

Harbour View coach Ludlow Bernard also admitted that his team's first goal, which paved the way, was a timely one.

"Both teams were stepping up their game but Portmore was doing it at a greater pace than us, so that goal slowed them down," said Bernard.

Laing's goal came moments after Jamoy Sibbles booted high over the crossbar from point-blank range and Shauntel Mundle had a chance at goal.

After the match, Bender lamented the performance of his team.

"Most of the basic fundamentals were not as good as it usually and it is unusual for Portmore to concede three goals," said Bender. "We were disjointed in the first half, but in the second half we started playing better."
