UNBEATEN GARVEY Maceo moved to within a point of securing a place in the quarter-final round of the ISSA/Pepsi/ Digicel daCosta Cup yesterday when they clipped Glengoffe 1-0 in their Group Five inter-zone game at Jamalco Sports Club in Clarendon. Garvey Maceo, who scored their lone goal through Andrew Vanzie, are now on the maximum six points from their two inter-zone games. They lead the group ahead of second-place St. Thomas Technical, who registered a 2-0 win over Brimmervale at Carder Park in Portland and moved up to four points.
Defending champions Glenmuir, who started their Group Six inter-zone campaign with a 9-0 win against Annotto Bay, were in spanking form in their game against Dinthill at the Spanish Town Prison Oval in St. Catherine, winning a 4-1.
The Jackie Walters-coached Glenmuir team, which scored through Ramon Whittaker, Keno Morrah, Ricardo Webb and Drian McNain, remain joint leaders of the group on six points with the season's surprise team, Fair Prospect, who made it two wins from their two inter-zone games with a 2-0 win against Annotto Bay.
Cornwall College, who got off to a disappointing start in Group One with their 2-2 draw against Grange Hill, surged to the top of the standings with a 3-1 win over Ocho Rios at Drax Hall in St. Ann, which lifted them to four points. Grange Hill and Frome played to a 1-1 draw in the group's second game at St. Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS), which leaves both teams in joint second place on three points each.
"It was a pretty decent performance from the team today," said Cornwall College's coach Dr. Dean Weatherly, whose team scored through Radcliff Hall, Jason King and Edward Campbell. "This result means our passage to the quarter-finals has gotten much smoother."
In the top-of-the-table Group Three clash, Munro and Bellefield battled to a 0-0 draw, which leaves them joint leaders of the group with four points. However, the exciting Lennon, who lost their first-round game 3-2 to Bellefield, rolled back into contention with a 1-0 win against Spaldings.
In the competitive Group Four, Manchester High moved to the top of the standings following their 0-0 draw with STETHS, which lifted them to four points. Clarendon College, who lost their first-round game, bounced back into the race with 1-0 win over Holmwood, which puts them into second place with three points.
