Trinidad & Tobago overturn Singapore
published: Thursday | November 15, 2007

AUCKLAND, New Zealand (CMC):

TRINIDAD AND Tobago overturned Singapore at the World Championship yesterday to enhance their prospects of finishing in the top-10, but Barbados were stunned by one of the newcomers and will fall below that ceiling.

In the second match of the ninth to 16th play-off section of the championship, T&T put their narrow defeat to Samoa the previous day behind them and stopped Singapore 42-32.

"It's disappointing that we're out of the top eight, so we must be at least ninth for this tournament to mean anything," T&T coach Grace Parkinson-Griffith said.

"We're looking forward to our next game against Botswana. They are a nippy team and in a pre-championship game we beat them by 18 goals, so we are confident we can beat them again."

In the other match with Caribbean interest, the stocks of World No. 7 Barbados plunged further when World Championship first-timers Botswana held off a late charge to complete a stunning 44-43 victory in the first match of the play-off section.

In the other two matches, Fiji stomped Scotland 58-37, and Wales crushed Malaysia 69-32.
