WINS CONTINUE to be a scarce commodity for August Town and Arnett Gardens as they played their way to a 1-1 draw at the UWI Bowl, in the Cash Plus Premier League yesterday.
With both teams struggling to move away from the bottom half of the table, the draw was the sixth of the season for Arnett Gardens while August Town are winless in their last three home games.
August Town's Daniel Shaw blasted a spectacular 27th-minute free kick which barely cleared the wall before flying into the roof of the net, high and to the left of a well-beaten Julian McLeish.
August Town custodian Devon Haughton did well to pluck a powerful Fabian Smith header from a 35th- minute corner out of the air to keep his side ahead, going into the break.
However, Arnett Gardens came out for the second half the more dangerous looking of the two teams. Craig Hunter's 49th-minute shot to goal, which resulted from the August Town team napping, skimmed off the top of the post.
Veteran striker Kevin Wilson did not make the same mistake when enterprising play on a quick counterattack gifted him with juicy volley from just outside the 18-yard area.
Taking care to make sure the attempt stayed low, Wilson sunk his boot into the effort, which flew past a hapless Haughton to bring his team level.
Almost a win
August Town substitute Zico Herrera looked to have the game won when he rounded McLeish en route to goal in the 87th minute, but with a gaping net at his disposal, he stumbled to allow the grateful keeper to recover.
"We have a lot of young players on the team, I thought we played a good game and definitely dominated the first half," said August Town coach Calvert Fitzgerald.
"I really wanted all three points today. In the end, we only got one but I'm still grateful for that fact," he said. While seemingly annoyed with the officiating, Arnett coach Max Straw was pleased with the second-half effort put in by his team.
"I thought we really came out and took control of the game in the second half, we really moved the ball around and we could have come away with a win here," Straw said.
