Concerned about cable monopoly
published: Thursday | November 15, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

I am concerned about the direction in which the cable business is moving. I am living in Portmore and was served by Jamaica Amalgamated Cable Systems (JACS). We were able to view a wide variety of channels at a reasonable price of anywhere between $1,200 and $1,600 which we considered very reasonable.

Flow has since taken over JACS and the service we were getting before is now likely to cost us anywhere between $2,500 and $3,500. What is really happening?

Monopoly

I contacted a cable company (that offers excellent service) out of Norman Road in East Kingston to find out how to sign up with them. I was told they had no licence to operate in Portmore. So how comes Flow is able to operate all over Jamaica? Why are we trying to create another monopolistic monster. We are given less by Flow for far more.

I am not interested in these Flow packages. I am already comfortable with the channels I now have. Who is going to protect us from these creatures? Why are things being thrust upon us? Can't we see where this thing is headed. Are we creating another JPS and JTC of the seventies? Haven't we learnt anything?

I am, etc.,

Concerned Portmore Citizen
