THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WISH to humbly comment on the recent happenings that have unfolded over the past two weeks regarding the Cuba light bulb scandal. It it with deep regret that I learnt of the excessive expenditure for the distribution of free light bulbs which was a gift to the Jamaican people. I prefer to get all the facts before forming an opinion, however, since the facts are not forthcoming from the former minister, it therefore leads me to comment only on what I know.

I am greatly concerned that any government would utilise such a worthwhile opportunity for the Jamaican people to pursue personal gain. It is quite unfortunate that the former junior minister had to weep openly in the House.

Heartless

The reality, though, is that many Jamaicans are weeping openly as we realise that there is a lack of respect among public officials for the nation's public purse. It seems that we do not place enough value on the hard-working efforts of many citizens who have to sometimes struggle to make ends meet on a daily basis. And then, to have your tax dollars fit snuggly into someone's side pocket leads one to conclude that government for the people by the people is heartless.
