MegaFone super weekend of racing
published: Friday | November 9, 2007

Orville Clarke, Freelance Writer

The MegaFone Super Weekend of Racing commences tonight with the MegaFone Masquerade Party at Morgan's Harbour, Port Royal, starting at 7:00 p.m.

The action switches to Caymanas Park tomorrow for the 29th running of the $4.5 million MegaFone Superstakes to be contested by 11 native bred three-year-olds and up over 2000 metres.

The popular Kiddies Stables and MegaFone infield tent for specially invited guests (Mardi Gras style) will be activated tomorrow as well.

Entertainment at the track will be provided by Tony Rebel, Richie Spice and Cherine Anderson, among others.

Showpiece event

The weekend of activities concludes on Sunday with the annual TOBA Yearling Sale and barbecue in the official car park at Caymanas Park starting at 9:00 a.m.

In addition to the meet's showpiece event, the Grade One Superstakes (Invitational), the mammoth 13-race programme, which commences at 11:15 a.m., also features the $2 million MegaFone Caribbean Sprint over 1200 metres to be contested by 13 starters, including the hot ante-post favourite MUSICAL MAESTRO; the $1.5 million MegaFone Mile for imported horses and the $1 million MegaFone Juvenile Sprint over 1300 metres for native bred two-year-olds.

The Superstakes will feature a big clash between the 2004 winner DISTINCTLY IRISH (Winston Griffiths up) and reigning 'Horse of the Year' MIRACLE MAN (Allen Maragh) who won it in 2005 and 2006 when having DISTINCTLY IRISH behind in second on both occasions.

Today's programme will facilitate two Super-6s, the first embracing races one to six, the second from eight to 13. The Pick-9 gets under way in race number five. There are no carryovers.

In the eighth race, the MegaFone Juvenile Sprint over 1300 metres, the very speedy MR. SKILL (working well) should not be caught, while other firm fancies are MUSICAL MAESTRO in the 10th and DISTINCTLY IRISH ahead of MIRACLE MAN in the Superstakes
