TACARIGUA, Trinidad (CMC):
GERMANY-BASED forward Wayne Legerton helped himself to a hat-trick as Trinidad & Tobago's men restored some order on the opening day of the Caribbean Hockey Cup when they crushed Jamaica 9-0 on Wednesday.
In the final match of the day's four-match schedule, the hosts' stick-men coasted past the Jamaicans after leading 5-0 at the interval to avenge their women's 2-1 defeat earlier in the day.In the morning session, a youthful Jamaican women's team stunned the hosts' women's line-up.
Spirited match
The Jamaican girls, who were outplayed for most of the match by T&T, played a very spirited match and despite falling behind to a 19th-minute Patricia Borneo goal, they battled hard in hot conditions.
With seconds to go before the half-time whistle, Jamaica's Shackera Williams' wayward shot on goal from just inside the semi-circle went straight to teammate Shana-Kay Tullonge, who skilfully turned the ball into the open net with T&T goalkeeper Petal Derry stranded. In the second period, the Jamaicans showed more offensive ambitions and from a short corner, vice-captain Dadreann Clarke's weak shot managed to bounce over goalkeeper Derry and past a defender and into the net for the lead in the 51st minute.
