NOTEWORTHY - Walk good, Commish!
published: Friday | November 9, 2007

Walk good, Commish!

On the front page of The Gleaner of October 31 was an outstanding photograph of Police Commissioner Lucius Thomas, sitting for the last time in his office, before leaving what I saw as 'The Ivory Tower'. He had climbed to the top of the ladder, but curtailed his contracted period a little past mid-way. But Commish, you alone know the reason for this sudden departure.

His resignation brought shock and dismay not only to members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, but to a wider cross section of the nation. His good working relationship and otherwise, echoed by the ancillary staff, likewise from the rank and file of the policemen and women, are indicative of a trustworthy and upright servant of the state. Walk good, former Commissioner Lucius.

- E.N. Perkins, JP,P.O. Box 415, Mandeville

A man as commish

I don't think a woman would be suitable for the job of police commissioner. With more than 1,000 being killed, the job needs a tough warrior - as a commissioner, to do the task.

Most women are tender-hearted, compassionate - not tough enough as the men. Corruption is rampant in the island, in the police force and everywhere. It seems to me that all the police commissioners in the past have been able to do 'very little' to stem the corruption and the crime rate. So, whoever comes in will face a gigantic challenge and task.

The Government of Jamaica is too soft. We need a tough Government, one which will grant justice where it is due; one which will not be afraid to get rid of garrisons, gangsters, etc. So should the new police commissioner. And I am in favour of Mr. Adams. He seems very impressive and fearless.

- Donald J. McKoy, Spanish Town
