Clarity still sought on signboards
published: Wednesday | November 7, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

I was pleasantly surprised to have received a letter from the KSAC last week, hand delivered to my office, addressing concerns that I had raised in an earlier letter addressed to you which was published as your 'Letter of the Day' on Wednesday last.

Having now seen this supposedly private correspondence from the KSAC, the following is an edited version of my response to Mr. Lincoln Evans, acting town clerk, in which I have attempted to clarify my position and to correct certain factual inaccuracies contained therein:

Dear Mr. Evans,

It is unnecessary for you to "urge" us to "respect the laws of the country" as that is what I am accustomed to doing both on a personal and a professional level. The very fact that you have chosen to do so suggests to me that you did not comprehend the views that I was attempting to put forth in the letter published in The Gleaner to which you refer.

Had I been clear as to which government agency did in fact have the authority to grant permission for the erection of such signs, I would have had no hesitation whatsoever in paying any and all dues as we have done in the past, and were doing with the KSAC, prior to the unfortunate incident involving the NWA.

I again ask, could we have, in all honesty, been expected to continue paying dues to the KSAC when the NWA (wrongly or rightly) had flat out told us that the granting of such responsibility was theirs, and that the signs would be removed regardless of what the KSAC had to say? Already being out of pocket close to $1,000,000, surely you can relate to our position, even if you do not agree with same.

Respect

In closing, I have the utmost respect for the mayor and for his attempts "to bring order to the municipality and to promote and foster commerce." Our record in this regard speaks for itself and we will continue to offer our support for his commendable efforts. That said, I remind you, and the goodly mayor, that one can only "respect" or obey laws that are clear, and laws on which the various government agencies not only have consensus, but about which they themselves are clear!

Otherwise the expected result will be nothing more than disorder, confusion and anarchy.

I am, etc.,

JOHN P. AZAR
