Jamaica win KFC Cup
published: Monday | October 29, 2007

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC):

Jamaica beat defending champions Trinidad & Tobago by 28 runs to win the KFC Cup regional limited-overs title at the 3Ws Oval yesterday.

Playing in the first day/night final of the regional tournament, Trinidad & Tobago were dismissed for 202 off 49.3 overs, chasing Jamaica's 230 all out off 50 overs.

Besides winning the title, a number of Jamaicans picked up leading awards. Jerome Taylor was named Man of the Match, Brendan Nash the Best Bowler of the Final Four, Shawn Findlay, who took three catches in last night's final - two quite breathtaking - and effected a brilliant run-out, the Best Fielder of the Final Four, and Brenton Parchment, who hit a half century in the final, earned the award for being the Best Batsman in the Final Four series.

"It's our first win since 1999 and to come out and show our true worth was wonderful," remarked Taylor after accepting his award at the post-match presentation ceremony on the field. "I think we were more organised this time."

Victory enabled Jamaica to break an eight-year drought, as the title success over the defending champions represented the island's first limited- overs regional title since winning the one-day championship in 1999.

"Thank the Almighty for this day," admitted Chris Gayle, the Jamaican skipper. "Well done to the team, the management and coaching staff. Everyone played their part."

Gayle, whose team batted first, said he thought "230 was a pretty decent total to defend on this surface".

Daren Ganga, captain of the Trinidad and Tobago team, said: "Congratulations to Chris Gayle and Jamaica ... they really pushed us to the line."
