Think before you stag
published: Monday | October 29, 2007

Daviot Kelly, Staff Reporter

We've heard the tales, seen the movies and witnessed the embarrassing looks on the faces of grooms everywhere, when the topic of bachelor parties come up.

It's one of those male traditions which never seem to get old. But not all stag parties have strippers popping up out of cakes, exotic dancers wearing only their smiles and enough alcohol to flood Portmore. Others are laid-back affairs with just a few of the guys.

So, just in case you don't want to have any embarrassing material to live down or to explain to the missus, keep it simple. Markdecided to do exactly that with his party. It was more like a guys' night out than anything else.

"Jus mi brethren dem, some dominoes, liquor galore and some sistrens came over and we all had a grand time," he says. Of course, the fact that women were there made it even more untraditional.

"We chat bout the good old 'mongrel' days and who waan draw 'card' pon mi bout mi a get married an mi haffi retire from the game now an all a dat," he recollects fondly. Compare that to Horatiowho told of a stag party that was more 'risque'.

"We rented out a private room at a club in New Kingston and trust me, that was tha real shizzle. Strippers, liquor fi kill, money a dash wey pon girl, man a make out wid girl an yu know ... crazy music, crazy vibes," he said. Apparently nobody was uncomfortable but this kind of party is not for everybody.

Like everything in the game of life, there are some rules to observe. Girls don't belong on a stag night unless they're the entertainment!

Names changed due to request.

Get a rough idea of what the groom-to-be would like to do and what his boundaries are. A bad stag party can cause problems in a friendship. Surprise yes! But don't embarrass!

Don't reserve mega expensive venues and activities unless you're certain all guests can afford it.

Try to be sensitive to all guests' likes, dislikes, cultures and beliefs. If necessary, invite some of the oddballs to the wedding only.
