Early leaders Seba targeting mid-season final
published: Tuesday | October 23, 2007

Two second half goals by a Seba United team that ended the game with 10 men, earned them a come from behind 2-1 victory over St. Georges of Portland, in a Cash Plus Premier League football match at Lynch Park on Sunday.

Winning coach Theodore Whitmore said his team stuck to the game plan, but were "probably affected by the long journey from Montego Bay."

He added that Seba, now sitting atop the standings on seven points in a four-team tie with Waterhouse, August Town and Portmore United, are now "looking forward to the mid-season final."

Their next game is against Village United tomorrow at home.

Both teams went into the game with four points from three games, but Seba had the better play from the opening whistle and launched a series of attacks through Wilfred Smith, Mario Samuels and playmaker Oliver Trail, who was later ejected in the 50th minute after picking up a second yellow card.

Cheered on by a capacity home crowd, St. Georges came into their own and started to counter-attack through Richardo Watson, Omar Hendersen, Denroy Dennis and Damion Harwood. They were rewarded in the 10th minute, when Omar Brissett took a slicing free kick from across the left flank and Harwood headed home to give them a 1-0 lead.

St. Georges started to play a more relaxed and laid back game, while Seba threw everthing into attack in the quest for an equaliser. They were, however, denied by the stout defence of Ricardo Taylor, Dwayne Holmes and brillant goalkeeping from Ralston Robinson, as the first half ended with St. Georges holding on to their narrow lead.

The start of the second half saw a more energized and experienced Seba team making inroads in the St. Georges defence, but poor finishing at times was their downfall.

The ejection of playmaker Trail was somewhat a blessing in disguise for the Seba team, which completely dominated the second half. They eventually scored the equaliser from a build-up between Samuels, Delroy Ellis and Ricardo Geddes, which resulted in Geddes slotting home from inside the 18-yard box in the 66th minute.

From thereon on it was all Seba United, who went ahead in the 77th minute through Smith, who had a brillant game.

The introduction of Donovan Peart added more firepower to the Seba unit, which launched relentless attacks, to which St. Georges had no answer. Seba should have scored a third goal after being awarded a penalty, but the shot was placed wide by Smith.

St. Georges coach, Donavon Duckie disappointed with the loss, said inexperience and complacency probably cost them a victory. He, however, gave the assurance that his team will recover in time for tomorrow's next game against Portmore United.

St. Georges 1

Damion Harwood 10th

Seba United 2

Ricardo Geddes 66th

Wilfred Smith 77th
