Coach Kendale Mercury yesterday blamed a lack of heart for his team's 0-2 loss to August Town in the Cash Plus Premier League, their third loss in succession and second since he took over.
Daniel Shaw in the 39th minute and substitute Nicholas McCreath got the goals for the Kingston-based team, who are having their second year in top-flight football. The loss kept Village rooted to the bottom of the table with one point, while August Town advanced to seven.
"There is no heart. That is how I see it because I told the players before that to win the game, we had to score three goals based on how I saw the pattern and we scored zero," a very disappointed Mercury said to The Gleaner.
"I saw us down 0-1 and there was no fight and there was only about three players fighting. I need to find out as a new coach where the hearts of the players are. Is it just the pay check or do they have the burning desire to win trophies?" he asked before answering his own question, "It does not seem so".
August Town's Calvert Fitzgerald was very honest in his self-effacing assessment of the game.
"Well, Village are not playing well at this moment and I think it is more down to that than us applying ourselves (why we won). We came here wanting the three points because we knew that it was possible for us to get to the top of the table," he said.
