Jamaica crush Barbados
published: Monday | October 22, 2007

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC):

Jamaica, behind a useful all-round performance from Brendan Nash, maintained their unbeaten record after completing a comfortable six-wicket victory over Barbados in their KFC Cup match at the Guyana National Stadium yesterday.

Jamaica restricted Barbados to 170 in 50 overs and hardly encountered any problems chasing, losing four wickets to win with seven overs remaining and confirm their position at the top of Zone A.

Jamaica will meet Guyana in the semi-finals, while Barbados, who were assured a place in the semis before this defeat, will oppose Trinidad and Tobago.

In 10 tight overs, Nash, a left-arm medium-pacer, conceded only 11 runs and when Jamaica responded, he made a solid unbeaten 36 off 57 balls.

Captain Chris Gayle provided the early boost to Jamaica's effort with 49 off 75 balls and there were also handy contributions from Shawn Findlay (39) and Danza Hyatt (34).

FIRST WIN

Meanwhile, Leeward Islands, led by a useful all-round performance from Omari Banks, registered their first win when they beat the West Indies Under-19 side by five wickets in their final-round match at Enmore, yesterday.

Banks took two for 18 from 10 overs of off-spin and off-spinner Chaka Hodge claimed three for 17 and Curtis Roberts, two for 33, as the young West Indians were dismissed for 159 off 46.4 overs despite a fighting 31 from Chesney Hughes.

Banks, batting with a runner due to a hamstring injury, finished unbeaten on 55 with two boundaries from 122 balls to take the Man-of-the-Match award, and see his team to 160 for five off 48 overs.
