published: Wednesday | October 10, 2007

Keisha A. Hill, Staff Reporter

THE WATA Amateur Tennis Championship climaxed on Saturday evening at the Liguanea Club when Dwayne Pagon hammered Matthew Rodriques to win the men's Class One section 6-4, 6-2.

During the eight-day event, about 100 of the island's top amateurs participated in five categories - the men's Class 1-4 events and Ladies B. In Class Two, Wayne Iton edged out Arnold Douglas 6-3, 6-4 in the Class Two competition.

Richard Harris defeated Warrenton Dixon 6-3, 6-3 in Class Three event, while Clive Smith clinched Class Four with a tough victory over Nelton Forsythe, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

Sasha Hanna defeated Stacey Moore 6-0, 6-4 to take home the Ladies B title.

Llockett McGregor, organiser of the event, expressed his satisfaction with the outcome of the tournament.

"There has been a new insurgence of young players to the tournaments and we are pleased that they have the opportunity to showcase their talent at these events," McGregor said.

National ranking

"From these competitions players will be able to improve their national ranking, which will assist them should they desire to play tournaments overseas," he said. The next in the series of competitions, dubbed the Wigton Windfarm Amateur Tennis Cham-pionships, will swing into action from October 28 to November 4 at the New Kingston venue.

The four-event Llockett McGregor Amateur Tennis Series ends next month and successful participants will receive new rankings, trophies and weekends for two at Jamaica resorts.
