Prison Oval tie ends scoreless
published: Monday | October 8, 2007

Dwight Nelson, Gleaner Writer

On a day when the heavy rains did not significantly affect the field conditions at the Spanish Town Prision Oval, Clarendon's Sporting Central Academy and Arnett Gardens played to a nil-all draw.

It was an evenly contested game with both teams having only a few chances at goal. In the fifth minute, Sporting Central's Sean Coleman got a through pass in Arnett's 18-yard box, but booted the ball over the bar.

Two minutes later Arnett's Leon Strickland got a great chance in the 18-yard box but was denied by defender Owen Gordon.

Attacking mode

The second half saw Sporting Central starting in an attacking mode but the Arnett defence, especially Gerald Neil, was too good.

At the other end, Arnett's Kenrick Rodriques took a volley in the 53rd minute off a Craig White free kick, but goalkeeper Leighton Murray pushed it over the crossbar.

For the rest of the game it was an even affair until the 87th minute when Arnett were denied a goal after Neil lashed a sizzling free kick from 22 yards out which had Sporting Central's goalkeeper diving full stretch to push the ball over the bar.

Arnett's coach Max Straw told The Gleaner that the team did not play to instructions, but got enough chances to win the game.

Sporting Central Academy's coach, Kevin Williams, said it was an open game and his team played to instructions. However, he was very disappointed with a draw.
