Register all over 18
published: Monday | October 8, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

The increase in brutal acts of criminality, especially the murdering of women and children in east Kingston over the past seven days, has prompted me to think that crime is nowhere close to being under control in Jamaica. Gunmen are increasing in brutality and hold, it seems, absolutely no regard for life.

Things cannot continue this way, otherwise anarchy will be unleashed upon us.

In order to bring crime levels down, I am proposing that the Government enact laws for full employment of every person aged 18 and older (except for those in school and those unfit for work). Every Jamaican aged 12 and older must be fully registered and provided with a picture identification card. At age 18, it must become mandatory that all Jamaicans get themselves enumerated.

If we ensure that every able-bodied individual work for at least eight hours of each weekday then there would hardly be time or energy for much wrongdoings to take place. Full registration of our people means full accountability. If we cannot account for each Jamaican, then we have an extremely difficult job in trying to track down the criminals among us, many of whom are of 'no fixed address'.

I am, etc.,
