Monitoring kids and buses
published: Monday | October 8, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

Let me first take this opportunity to congratulate Mr. Holness in his new position Minister of Education. The cellphone issue and the fact that the units attract thieves is a point of grave concern.

I have another issue. In the mornings, school, on average, begins between 7:45 and 8:15. Along the Spanish Town Road corridor, between Maxfield Avenue and Three Miles, almost all the bus stops are crowded with schoolchildren. The buses transporting these children are often dark tinted and have music not fit for airplay.

Mr. Minister, I am suggesting you set up an entity in collaboration with our social services to have education wardens trained in social work working in the same framework as transport authority personnel roving our streets, monitoring children seen out of school during school hours and visiting the schools and homes. The bus stops need to be manned to prevent loitering. Our children are our future, we need to educate them to facilitate their eventual transition into the workforce.

I am, etc.,

SUSAN GORDON-KINNAME
