Kingston's real state of mind
published: Monday | October 8, 2007

Four-month-old Rana-Jay Hurd in better times. She was killed along with her parents by gunmen in Norman Gardens, east Kingston. - Contributed

The Editor, Sir:

On Saturday I read an article on the front page of your paper headlined 'Slaughter'. It brought tears to my eyes. It spoke of the killing of seven persons, including a baby in a troubled East Kingston community called Rockfort. I read that the commissioner of police is pleading to the citizens to help them to fight the criminals but these pleas fall on deaf ears.

I would like to implore all Jamaicans to take a stand against criminals in their communities, do not hide them, do not protect them, because they will be coming for you next.

Stand up

What made me more upset, though, was when I read a poem on a website called urlyric.com, titled 'Kingston's Real State of Mind'. This poem spoke of criminals and guns, and how this is the way of life in Jamaica. This is how people see our country and it is not right.

The citizens need to stand up and demonstrate against crime in the same way they block the roads for water and light. Citizens of Jamaica need to stand up for their country.

I am, etc.,

A JAMAICA LOVER
