No woman likes to have a face with blemishes. Dull looking skin is certainly not in. And to make things worse, clear beautiful skin doesn't appear overnight, unless you have a fairy godmother.

But you don't need a magic wand to reveal radiant, healthy skin.

Simple procedure

Zit away your facial problems with a simple facial peel administered by your dermatologist. This simple procedure can rejuvenate your skin by improving it's texture and returning a youthful glow.

But what is a facial peel? A facial peel is a cosmetic, chemical treatment that helps lessen the appearance of blemishes, chicken pox scars, melasma, freckles, age spots, uneven skin pigmentation and other skin irregularities on the face. It can also reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Facial peel

Dermatologist Dr. Patricia Yap explains, "The facial peel is basically used to exfoliate the surface of the skin."

"The chemical used (in the process), loosens the cement between the cells so that they separate and shed. The process takes away the pigmentation that is on the skin," Dr. Yap added.

The peeling of the skin is microscopic and leaves skin with a healthy glow, while ridding it of blemishes.

If the question on your mind is what chemicals are used, Dr. Yap says there are a few. "There are different types, there is the glycolic (alpha hydroxy), Salisic Acid (beta hydroxy) and lactic acid."

Dr. Yap is a dermatologist at Apez Skin and Lazer Centre.yahneake.sterling@gleanerjm.com

How are these chemicals used?

Dr. Yap explains:

The face has to be cleansed thoroughly:

The solution is then applied (it is left on the face between 5-60 seconds, depending on how long you want to penetrate);

It is then neutralised;

And then, an after peel cream is applied to help aid the process of removing the pigment and the cells.

After a peel, it is recommended that the individual wears sunblock to protect the skin from the harmful rays of the sun.

Anyone can do a facial peel and according to Dr. Yap, it is safe to repeat a peel between two and four weeks.

For persons with scars, the length of time it takes to get a blemish-free face depends on the severity of your existing condition.
