Outstanding lives up to name

UNBEATEN THREE-year-old filly OUTSTANDING duly made it five in a row at Caymanas Park yesterday, this time in the overnight allowance feature for the G.A. 'Sarge' Bucknor Memorial Cup over the straight five course.

Although racing over the straight for the first time and pitted against some proven course specialists, OUTSTANDING was installed an even-money favourite in a field of 10 and in the end won by 1 1/2 lengths from 10-1 chance BULLET TRAIN who ran well from a bad draw on the far rails.

locked in a dogfight

Ridden by five-time champion Trevor Simpson, who is locked in a dogfight with apprentice Omar Walker for the jockeys' championship, OUTSTANDING chased highly-fancied course specialist DOUBLE BOW (2-1) and the well-backed TOOT DI HOOT coming on to the main track, eventually going by DOUBLE BOW approaching the distance running down off a true line, she kept on strongly to win convincingly from BULLET TRAIN, DIESEL (11-1) and the 99-1 outsider JET BLASTER.

Trained by the legendary 'Hall of Famer' Allan 'Billy' Williams for popular owner Roylton D'Cambre, OUTSTANDING, who was unraced as a two-year-old, is a bay filly by Law Of The Sea out of Tropical Magic. She was bred by her owner at his Aqueduct Farms in Bushy Park, St. Catherine.

Williams, who over the years has had a way with outstanding horses such as NONE SUCH, MABROUK, LEGAL LIGHT, RIMSKY, DISTINCTIVE BINGO, DISTINCTLY NATIVE and current 'Horse of the Year' MIRACLE MAN, said OUTSTANDING has delivered on every occasion, but she won't race as a four-year-old.

"She lived up to her name today but after this year she will be retired to stud," he disclosed. "We were unable to race her as a two-year-old after she went lame in November of last year, but I have been patient with her and this has paid off handsomely," he added. OUTSTANDING might next run in the Caribbean Sprint over 1200 metres on Superstakes day, November 10.

secondary feature

Earlier in the afternoon, the rejuvenated 10-year-old mare SEEMELATER (5-1) won the day's secondary feature for the Monica Todd Memorial Cup (claiming $170,000) over 2000 metres under title-chasing apprentice Omar Walker, but not before he was involved in a tremendous duel with arch-rival Trevor Simpson aboard 12-1 chance MAJESTIC KING.

SEEMELATER, who made most in the eight-strong field, was joined by MAJESTIC KING from the half mile and in a neck-and-neck duel and ferocious bumping match between the top two riders from early in the straight, SEEMELATER, on the inside, responded to a determined ride from young Walker leaving the furlong pole to win by 2 1/2 lengths. The winner is owned by Leroy Williams and trained by George Villiers.

With both riders having ridden one winner, they are still locked at the top of the standings with 54 winners each.
