THE CASH Plus Premier League (CPPL) continue today with a full slate of matches - some even more interesting than last week's opening round of games.
Among the matches to see this week is last season's most improved team, Reno of West-moreland, taking on defending champions Harbour View at STETHS. Last season both teams had a number of competitive games with Reno having the better of the match-ups from the second round onwards. Of interest to this game also is the fact that both sides were held to draws last week and that Reno had a near impregnable record at STETHS last season.
cracker of a match
Another match which could be a cracker is the one between the resurging giants Boys' Town and Seba United. Both teams registered good wins last week.
Seba United under the guidance of the magician Theodore Whitmore defeated 2006 champions Waterhouse 4-3 at Jarrett Park, while the Andrew Price-conditioned Boys' Town took care of August Town 2-1.
Both units must now be full of confidence, but what could make the difference is Boys' Town's home advantage as well as the predatory skills of George Vernal.
On the other hand, Whitmore seems to have brought back excitement to the Seba team with Delroy Ellis, Wilfred Smith and the youngster Mario Samuels, in particular, responding to his urgings.
New Clarendon flagbearers Sporting Central Academy showed enough pluck last week when they went down 1-0 to their predecessors, who now campaign from a new parish and under the name, Portmore United. They will be hoping to have better luck today when they meet former giants Arnett Gardens at Prison Oval.
Despite being a shadow of their former selves, Arnett Gardens should still have enough quality in goalkeeper Julian McLeish, Leon Strickland, Marcelino Blackburn and Walter Boyd. Chris Dawes should provide good leadership for Sporting Central.
first win
In eastern Jamaica, St. Georges of Portland will want to record their first win of the campaign against Village United of Trelawny. Based on their performance against the defending champions last week, it is not far-fetched to think that the newcomers could go one better. In Damion Harwood they have a decent goalscorer, but Village will not want to be the team to give St Georges their first victory.
Last week, Village showed guts and imagination but ran out of steam towards the latter part of the game. With Fabian Dawkins set to play his first game of the season and Oneil Robinson again expected to start in midfield, St Georges could have their work cut out for them. Two other players expected to taunt them are Portland natives Omar Allen and the skilful Leon Irving, who will both have a point to prove.
comfort
In western Kingston, Tivoli Gardens should find more comfort playing at their home ground than they did last week against Village United at Elliston Wakeland Centre.
Despite their less than impressive performance, they showed enough fight to draw a game at a venue at which they have always struggled. August Town are no longer a novelty in the league and it will take more than the quality of Daniel Shaw to propel them past the likes of Kasai Hinds, Steve Green, Roland Dean and new signing Roberto Fletcher.
The match that many will journey miles to see is the Drewsland clash of home team Waterhouse and perennial title challengers Portmore United.
