Western Bureau:
Seba came out on top by the odd-goal in seven at Jarrett Park, Montego Bay, last night as goals by Wilfred Smith (2) Ricardo Geddes and Kemar James gave them a nerve-wracking win over Waterhouse FC in their opening game in the 2007-08 Cash Plus Premier League.
"We made a lot of mistakes in defence, but seeing that it is the first game and the players were somewhat nervous we can understand," said Seba United's coach, Theodore 'Tappa' Whitmore. "We just have to head back to the drawing board and try to put things right."
Despite the defeat Waterhouse, which scored through Desmond Breakenridge, Kirk Ramsey and Jomo Gordon, played a very good game and with a little more luck might not have ended empty handed.
Seba started the game looking very purposeful and it was no surprise when they took the lead in seventh minute. Smith dropped a perfect pass into the path of Geddes and he calmly lifted the ball over the head of goalkeeper Richard McCallum, making the score 1-0.
Defensive blunder
The Montego Bay team doubled their lead in the 30th minute when a bad defensive blunder in the heart of the Waterhouse defence let through James on the goalkeeper and he made no mistake, booting in easily to make the score 2-0.
With coach Danilo Barrigga screaming advice from the bench, Waterhouse struck in the 36th minute. A blunder by Seba's goalkeeper Neil Lynch presented Breakenridge with a clear opening and he calmly tapped in, making the score 2-1.
However, Seba were to have the last laugh of the half when a series of slick passes between Delroy Ellis and James split open the defence for Smith, who stroked the ball elegantly into the goal, making the half-time score 3-1.
Waterhouse started the second half looking rather ominous and in one of the attacks, they struck again for the second time. A superb cross by Garfield Reid found Ramsey, who pushed between two defenders and nodded home, making the score 3-2.
As they did in the first half, Seba struck back again in 74th minute. The goal came when Geddes crossed to Smith before the goal and he struck a fierce grounder, which eluded the diving goalkeeper, making the score 4-2 as the fans went into a dancing frenzy.
With time running out in the game and Waterhouse all out in attack, they cut the deficit to one in the 83rd minute when Jonathan Williams was brought down inside the penalty area and the referee ruled penalty. Gordon made no mistake from the spot, making the final score 4-3.
