Mark Newsome booted home an 82nd minute winner as Boys' Town defeated August Town 2-1, in the opening round of the 2007-08 JFF Cash Plus Premier League at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Bowl yesterday.

Technical director of Boys' Town, Andrew Price, was a happy man after the match.

"We are playing away from home and collected three points, any coach must be encouraged about that. Normally when you are away from home we would be satisfied with a point, but I think we played well enough to get the three points."

Soft goal

Price added: "We gave up a soft goal in the last part of the game because of a lack of concentration, otherwise I think it was a flawless display. A lot our forwards are getting into goalscoring positions and we just need to work on our conversion rate."

The speedy Michael Campbell gave Boys' Town the lead in the 37th minute when he lobbed goalkeeper Damion Haytt. They hald that advantage until half-time and on the resumption, Boys' Town stepped up the pressure. But faulty shooting and good goalkeeping by Hyatt prevented the Colour Reds from increasing the lead.

However, August Town made use of a lapse in the Boys' Town defence and equalized in the 74th minute when Smith nodded home a cross from Daniel Shaw.

Brilliance

Two minutes later, Boys' Town showed a glimpse of brilliance after a beautiful build-up between Shawn Mckoy and Denzil Watson sent Campbell through, but his shot from point blank range went inches wide.

Campbell, who was a thorn in the side of the home side's defence, was instrumental in the winning strike.

He fired a forceful shot from the right side, which was parried by Hyatt, but fell in the path of Mark Newsome who buried the rebound into the goal. The game ended on a sour note when referee Howard Stennett sent off Boys' Town's Damion Benjamin and August Town's David Stultz for an off the ball incident.

August Town's coach, Calvert Fitzgerald, thought his team lost due to inexperience.

"Some of our young players like Kemar Smith came on and played a good game, but I think our young players need to put more effort into it, I think it is a lack of experience."
