Moneywise, Future savings, the right way to go!
published: Monday | October 1, 2007

Our financial goals change as we move through life, hence, it is always important to develop the right savings attitude from early. As these changes take place, we often neglect the one thing that we will ultimately require in the future, and that is savings.

In order to develop a savings plan, we should dispel the myth that because you do not earn a lot of money, you cannot save. Another myth is that only when you start earning more money, will you be able to start saving. You can always save with the income you are currently earning because, for most persons, when you begin to earn more, your spending pattern will, unfortunately, adapt to your new income. Therefore, you must convince yourself that you can begin now. Disciplined savings is the key to future wealth creation and saving is the cornerstone of paying for future financial goals. A good savings plan means making regular contributions and not just a single, lump-sum investment.

Here are some tips you can use towards future savings:

Set up a personal savings plan and budget - discipline, again, must be adopted in order to make regular savings contributions.

Identify a savings goal.

Set up automatic deductions from your salary, this way, you are paying yourself first.

Save all unexpected income received, e.g. bonuses and allowances.

How can you benefit from saving?

Take advantage of the compounding effect on deposit accounts.

Place funds for a longer period, especially if you do not have any plans for it in the near future.

Take advantage of tax-free accounts.

Be realistic about the expected returns, especially where there are no additions made regularly to the account.

Begin your savings plan today in order to be financially prepared for the future!
