Tocumen ready to rumble
published: Wednesday | September 26, 2007

RIGGS VICTORY (second left), running as the 6-5 favourite with Douglas Badaloo aboard, makes it two in a row at the expense of SOFTLY MY DEAR (Anthony Baker) in the eighth race over the straight five course at Caymanas Park on Saturday. Horses from the $210,000 and less claiming spread hold centrestage at Caymanas Park today when 12 of them face the starter in Race No. 2 of the second Caymanas Track Limited (CTL) Claiming Series over 1200 metres.

Among the starters are RISING MOON and SIR CHARLES, previous winners of races in the series.

Both are expected to figure seriously in the outcome and together with TOCUMEN, HARMONICS, TRUE SENSATION and MOST WANTED, should make it close.

TOCUMEN, who was claimed out of Dennis Lee's stables by new trainer Alden Francis on September 1, will more than likely start favourite with competent 2.0kg claiming apprentice Harriston Lewis aboard.

The eight-year-old bay gelding was not disgraced when chasing home fast-time runaway winner ROBIN'S BAY over the round five course on September 1, finishing 7-1/4 lengths second behind a fast 59.4 clocked by the winner.

Possible win No 19

TOCUMEN finished a clear second in the process and with the additional furlong even more to his liking, the veteran campaigner could well record career win No. 19.

Although getting on in age, TOCUMEN has been running consistently well and indications are he has more races to win. He has already won twice from seven starts this season, firstly on June 9 when leading home RED I over 1200 metres on a $210,000 claiming tag, following up over 1100 metres on July 7 in a driving finish from subsequent winners MUSIC MASTER and MOST WANTED, a race in which the then favourite RISING MOON finished 3-1/2 lengths fifth.

Having secured a favourable draw on the outside of the field, TOCUMEN should win from the convenient mark of 55.0kg.

Still, he can expect stiff opposition from the likes of RISING MOON along with the recent winner HARMONICS, SIR CHARLES, TRUE SENSATION and the consistent MOST WANTED.

The down-in-class RISING MOON looks the fastest in the field and providing he comes away cleanly from the number one post position, will have to be caught under title-chasing apprentice Omar Walker.

RISING MOON really looks tempting at the weights with 52.0kg and if TOCUMEN skips a beat, looks the one best equipped to capitalise.

So it's TOCUMEN to win from the grey RISING MOON and Trevor Simpson's mount HARMONICS.

Other firm fancies on a day when the races have a very competitive look about them are the well-trained STORMIN AWAY to stave off GIRLOFMYDREAMS in the opening race for two-year-olds; MR. PRIDE to have the measure of old rival EARTHWINDANDFIRE in the third, the much-improved GRACE MARIE to complete the hat-trick at the expense of SIR KHAN and THE SMOKER in the fourth, OK BABY ahead of MISS ATLANTIC STAR in the sixth and the speedy CHAIN OF COMMAND to go all the way in the seventh.
