In 2006 alone, the Spanish Town Police Station reported that there were six fatal accidents along the Spanish Town Bypass.
Sergeant Stanley Gardener, of the St. Catherine North Traffic Department, said several initiatives put in place have been successful in taming the occurrence of accidents along the bypass.
"The general cause of accidents along the bypass is impatience, that sums up everything. Motorists speed and practice bad driving habits because they are impatient and this results in many accidents and sometimes fatalities," said Sergeant Gardener. "So what we did was to have campaigns in the division to educate drivers on proper driving habits. Additionally, we have increased our patrols along the bypass as well, erected road signs and have remarked pedestrian crossings, all steps which have really aided lessening accidents."
It is reassuring, somewhat, to hear that the lawmen are taking some steps in regard to curbing the accident monster along the bypass. Nonetheless, they will not be able to maintain a presence on all sections of the road at all times and this may present a perfect opportunity for some speed-loving demon to take advantage of situation. So then, a word of warning to all motorists and pedestrians travelling along this accident bad spot, please proceed with unflinching caution.
