The sitting of the House of Representatives and the Senate will resume tomorrow with the swearing-in of persons appointed to sit in the Upper House, while the Lower House will carry out a similar exercise by swearing in Members of Parliament.
Prime Minister Bruce Golding yesterday appointed the full slate of senators, with former Leader of Opposition Business in the Senate, Dr. Oswald Harding, returning to the Upper House.
Other Government senators are Hyacinth Bennett, former president of the National Democratic Movement (NDM); Thomas Tavares-Finson, the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) representative on the Electoral Commission of Jamaica; Ian Murray, an attorney-at-law; Dennis Meadows, former member of the NDM; and, Desmond McKenzie, Mayor of Kingston.
Appointment of the six
Mr. Golding, in a letter to Governor-General Professor Kenneth Hall, advised him that the appointment of the six took effect on Monday, September 24.
Prime Minister Golding previously appointed seven ministers and parliamentary secretaries to the Upper House. They are Dwight Nelson, Don Wehby, Dorothy Lightbourne, Warren Newby, Aundré Franklyn, Dr. Ronald Robinson and Arthur Williams.
Meanwhile, the People's National Party last night said Opposition Leader Portia Simpson Miller had advised Governor-General Professor Kenneth Hall of those persons to be appointed as Opposition members of the Senate.
They are Arnold J. (AJ) Nicholson, Q.C., Leader of Opposition Business; Keith Desmond (KD) Knight, Q.C; Navel Clarke; Norman Grant; Noel Sloley; Basil Waite; Sandrea Falconer; and Mark Golding.
Mrs. Simpson Miller said the team represented experience, expertise and youth. She said the team would work closely with the Opposition Members of Parliament to ensure that the interests of the Jamaican people are protected.
