'Little Lisa' launches debut album
published: Wednesday | September 26, 2007

André Jebbinson, Staff Reporter

Lisa Grant - Contributed

Mid 2002 marked the turning point of an excellent show of talent at the Sons and Daughters United Church of God in Rolling Town after a breathtaking performance by the then 22 year old Grant. Endowed with talent, vim and grace, the 'songstress' redefined class when she bowed her head at the end of a thrilling rendition of the well-known Standing on the Promises. The audience had no reservations when it came to their money's worth as the over three hundred throng vigorously applauded Lisa.

Fast forward to 2007 and it is the year Lisa sings a bigger tune. She could not be any happier as she launches her debut album, Never Look Back.

"I am very excited about my first album. It is a lot of work but I know it will be worth it," Grant said.

The album features five songs written by Grant. The other songs include some taken from hymnals and other known choruses. This is a project that was two years in the making and incorporates mento, reggae and traditional gospel music.

Anointed and charismatic

Melodious, anointed and charismatic are adjectives that best describes the singer, and as she evolved from 'Little Lisa' to Lisa Grant, she has sought to fulfil her aspiration of becoming a renown singer. Lisa has shared the stage with many of Jamaica's gospel music ministers, which she says has helped to mould her into a responsible and mature minister of gospel music.

"I grew up in the church and this is what I want to do. I love what I do and now I just want to reach somebody," she said.

Grant is not worried about finding her audience. Instead, she said variety has always been what makes the Jamaican music industry a special one.

"You have different styles and different flavours. If you don't like my music, you will like somebody else's music," she said. "This is something I have sat down and talked to the Lord about. I think this is the year for me."

So, for now, she will enjoy whatever free time she has. A bigger music career will mean she will have less time to do fewer things. Lisa is single and enjoys the company of her peers. A normal day for the singer comprises of her regular nine-to-five job, which is often followed by rehearsals or church activities.

For Lisa Grant the sky is the limit and with each new day and the challenges and promises that come with it, the singer hopes that all her dreams and aspirations will mature beyond tomorrow.

"I know by the grace of God, I will be going places. This is something I have spoken to the Lord about. He knows my heart and he had been working things out. By his grace I will be going over the world with his word," Grant said.
