Fourteen-time champion trainer Philip Feanny and reigning champion Wayne DaCosta are engaged in a private duel for the 2007 trainers' championship and in the end it could be their two-year-olds who decide the outcome.
Significantly, both trainers have dominated the two-year-old division, so much so that both have won 12 races (six each) of the 13 run so far.
They control the best two-year-olds in training, Feanny posting above average juveniles such as SUPER DAVE, I'M MAGIC, GIRLOFMYDREAMS, HONEY BUNNY and THE QUEEN to win, while DaCosta has replied with his classy colt MR. SKILL, STORMIN AWAY, AHWHOFAH and THE REAL STREAM, among others.
Significantly, only one trainer has managed to snatch a race from them of the 13 run so far and that is Richard Azan, with GOOD SENSE on September 8.
Thanks to a double comprising OUTFITHER and THE QUEEN on Saturday, Feanny has extended his lead over DaCosta in the trainers' championship to nearly $1 million.
Feanny has so far amassed $17,802.800 in stakes by virtue of 41 winning horses, while DaCosta has $16,851.000 to hold down second with 37 winning horses.
The championship could come down to whichever trainer wins the rich and prestigious Supreme Ventures-sponsored Jamaica 2-Y-O Stakes series of three races, culminating on Boxing Day with the $3 million Supreme Ventures Jamaica 2-Y-O Stakes over 1600 metres. That series, which kicks off next month, offers $7.5 million in prize money.
Feanny and DaCosta will clash in yet another two-year-old contest (over 1300 metres) in the opening race at Caymanas Park tomorrow. DaCosta will saddle STORMIN AWAY, GOOD HOPE and HEART OF GOLD, with Feanny posting GIRLOFMYDREAMS and LIMA'S BIGBADBOY.
Azan will be trying to stop them with GOOD SENSE, again.
