POLICE'S ORDANE Hutchinson fell just short of a Jamaican one-day milestone yesterday, but his massive innings of 221 saw Police to a crushing 230-run victory over Lucas in their Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) All-Island limited overs quarter-final at Elletson Road.
Hutchinson came up just four runs short of Melbourne's Andre McCarthy's one-day record score of 225 made against Kingston and St. Andrew last year, but he and Kemar Anderson (86 not out) compiled a record, unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 313 runs which helped Police to 349 for four in their allotted 50 overs.
The pair came together after Police lost Renford Pinnock, six, Demetrious Francis, nine, Balwin Virgo, four, and Renford Bodie, zero, and were struggling at 36 for four in the ninth over.
dominance
Hutchinson was clearly the dominant partner - hitting 15 sixes and 16 fours off just 177 deliveries while Anderson faced 102 deliveries in his knock which was laced with six fours.
Markland Guy and Dwayne Guthrie, both who destroyed the top order and at one stage had 2-22 and 2-14 respectively, ended with 2-38 and 2-57 for Lucas.
In reply, Lucas's frustration in the field was too much and they could not cope with Police's bowling attack, led by Sheldon Cottrell (3-26), Kemar Anderson (2-23) and Bodie (2-10), as they fell for 119.
Meanwhile, the day's feature match at Alpart Sports Club between hosts St. Elizabeth and Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) lasted for less than four hours.
In less than 50 total overs, the Soldiers defeated St. Elizabeth by five runs.
JDF's Warren Medwinter had a good all-round performance, making 38 in his team's innings of 96 off 19.4 overs against Chris Dyer (4-14) and Conroy Miller (3-12).
Medwinter then claimed 5-26 as St. Elizabeth were blown away for 91 in 21.5 overs Beckford top scored with 22.
At Melbourne Oval, the hosts, led by half centuries from Damion Henry and Llewellyn Meggs, both University of the West Indies students, defeated Portland by 154 runs.
Batting first, Melbourne scored 288 for nine in their allotted 50 overs thanks to Henry's innings of 83 and Meggs' 53 not out. Donovan Pagon contributed 31.
Raymond Hanson claimed 2-31 for Portland.
portland crumbled
Portland, in reply, fell for 143 in 23.4 overs. Hanson top scored with 49. Damion Jacobs (2-41) and Xavier Charvies (3-45) took the most wickets for the Kangaroos.
At Goodyear Oval, St. Thomas collapsed from 129 for four to 132 all out to hand Manchester victory by 76 runs.
Ziggy Levy (4-35) and Donovan Sinclair (2-2) proved unplayable as the home team lost their last six wickets for three runs.
Earlier, Manchester made 208 in 44 overs with Zaniffe Fowler getting 43 and Levy 38. Xavier Scott took 5-34 and Omar Brooks 3-54.
In next Saturday's semi-finals, Police face JDF at Kensington Park and Melbourne play Manchester at Chedwin Park.
