Unjust to have two passports
published: Thursday | September 13, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

Someone has actually asked, "Does it matter if they (legislators) have two passports?"

Yes, it matters. It matters because it is unjust that anyone should make laws that they do not have to live under if they so choose; that anyone should have the privilege of bringing one country into a mess when they can run to another, that anyone should be able to access the protection of a foreign government when being called to account for deeds done on behalf of people who have to live the consequences of what their leaders have done.

The simple fact is that some people want to eat their cake and have it too. That cannot work. Regardless of which party they belong to, the people who represent us in Parliament should have to live with the consequences of their acts in power as we the people of Jamaica do.

The able and willing Jamaicans who would like to represent us in Parliament but possess dual citizenship should either find niches in other spheres of influence, serve others abroad in foreign houses (as some now do) or fully throw their lot in with the Jamaican people by renouncing their allegiance to foreign powers.

I am, etc.,
