St James man sought for questioning
published: Thursday | September 13, 2007

WESTERN BUREAU:

Investigators are now seeking a St. James man who they say is the registered owner of the two motor vehicles abandoned by gunmen during a shoot-out with a police party in Anchovy in the parish on Monday.

He has been named as Rayon Campbell, otherwise called 'Paupy', of Bogue Village and Anchovy addresses.

"We are seeking Campbell, to whom both vehicles are licensed, as we are of the opinion that he can assist us in our probe," disclosed Supt. Steve McGregor, commanding officer for the St. James Police Division.

The Gleaner has learnt that at least three locations across the parish were visited by police, in efforts to find Campbell.

A .38 Taurus revolver, ski masks and a cellular phone, which is now the focus of a forensic audit, were also recovered from the vehicles - a Toyota Corolla motor car and a Honda CRV.

The routine police mobile patrol turned into a high-speed chase on the Rockpleasant Road in Anchovy when they saw the vehicles driving heading in the opposite direction.

It is said that the drivers began reversing the vehicles and the police gave chase. Armed men subsequently alighted from the vehicles and opened fire at the cops. A shoot out ensued.

The gunmen escaped in nearby bushes.
