Robert Bailey, Freelance WriterTHE 43rd RENEWAL of the Roper Cup competition between North Street rivals Kingston College (KC) and St. George's College, which was set for tomorrow at KC field, has been cancelled.
Ian Phillpotts, secretary of the St. George's College Old Boys' Association, told The Gleaner yesterday that the cancellation of this year's event was due to a number of key factors.
"The original date was set for August 20, which was one week before the original general election date and two weeks before the scheduled start of the Manning Cup competition," said Phillpotts.
"However, because of the passage of Hurricane Dean and safety concerns with the respect to the recently concluded re-scheduled elections, it was proven a bit difficult to get everybody together for the eighth of this month."
Phillpotts also said: "We wouldn't want to go straight into the Manning Cup season, so both of the organising committees decided to cancel it."
In a press release sent yesterday by the old boys' associations of both St. George's KC, the teams apologised to all students, past and present, as well as to their many fans for the cancellation of this year's competition.
