THE EDITOR, Sir:
What would be the political mood of Jamaica if the outcome of the August 11 Leadership Debate was different between Mr. Golding of the JLP and the Most Honourable Prime Minister, Mrs. Simpson Miller of the PNP; in that, Mrs. Simpson Miller was declared the winner by popular acclaim?
Instead of experiencing 'muted' responses/discourses from the supporters of the 'Portia Factor' in the election campaign, the political analysts (who are political), supporters of some special interest groups, and supporters of the PNP, perhaps there would be some 'gloating' being directed at the JLP, and the detractors within the PNP.
It is interesting to note that after deeming this Leadership Debate as a 'must-see event', it suddenly lost its lustre to the extent that it was argued in some circles that this debate would only be significant in en-couraging the uncommitted voters to vote in the general election.
However, in my opinion, if the presentations of and outcomes of the political debates cause one uncommitted voter to exercise his/her franchise in this general election, then the hosting of these debates was another victory for democracy in Jamaica.
I am, etc.,
