Leewards ease past Windwards in TCL tourney
published: Friday | August 17, 2007

BASSETERRE (CMC):

Chesney Hughes hit a brilliant century as the Leeward Islands crushed the Windward Islands by 192 runs in their third round TCL West Indies Under-19 Challenge limited overs match at Cayon yesterday.

The 15-year old left-hander carved out 129 as the Leewards, asked to bat first, piled up 291 for eight from their 50 allotted overs.

In reply, the trio of Kelbert Walters, Trevier Smithen and Terrance Ward all grabbed two wickets as the Windwards capitulated for a paltry 99 from 25.5 overs.

The Leewards got a rousing start from Hughes and Kieron Powell, who smashed 41, as they shared an opening stand of 89.

When Powell and Sherwin Peters (7) fell in quick succession, Hughes found a partner in Devon Thomas (60), posting a third wicket stand of 108. Hughes eventually fell in the 49th over with Leewards well on their way to a challenging total.

In their turn at the wicket, the Windwards collapsed from a position of 37 without loss to 45 for four and never recovered. Keddy Lesporis hit the top score of 22 while captain Lauron Francois remained unbeaten on 17.

AT CONAREE: Guyana beat Trinidad & Tobago by five runs.

Scores: Guyana 201-8 off 50 overs (Rajindra Chandrika 43, Eugene La Fleur 41, Jonathan Foo 24; Jervon Charles 3-35).

Trinidad: 196 off 49.5 overs (Somant Maraj 56, Darren Bravo 47; Veerasammy Permaul 2-27, Steven Jacobs 2-38, Kellon Carmichael 2-47).
