Leewards batsmen force draw
published: Wednesday | August 8, 2007

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (CMC):

Barbados had their quest for an outright victory frustrated by defiant Leeward Islands batting as their fourth-round TCL West Indies Under-19 Challenge match finished in a draw yesterday.

Playing at Conaree, Terrance Ward and Kelbert David hit half-centuries as the Leewards, resuming at 150 for five in their second innings, just 28 runs ahead, were eventually dismissed at tea for 309.

Set 188 to win in the final session, Barbados made an attempt to reach their target but subsided to 84 for five after they lost early wickets.

Ward proved to be a thorn in Barbados' side, stroking the top score of 68 off 164 balls in 191 minutes, including 11 fours.

David ensured the tail wagged, hammering 59 from 179 balls in 226 minutes, with eight fours.

The pair shared a frustrating eighth-wicket stand of 118 after Barbados had managed to reduce the Leewards to 162 for seven.

Set 188 to win, Barbados lost wickets rapidly, with medium pacer Kelbert Walters picking up the first three scalps.

Kyle Corbin played on with the score on four, Simon Steele was bowled trying to hit through the off-side and Roger Williams was lbw playing back.

When Kyle Hope (19) and Shamar Cooke (0) departed cheaply, Barbados needed Ashley Nurse's unbeaten 25 and Brooks' unbeaten 18, to steer them to safety.

Windwards hold T&T

Defiant half-centuries from skipper Lauron Francois and opening batsman Wayne Harper helped the Windward Islands salvage a draw against Trinidad and Tobago in their fourth-round TCL West Indies Under-19 Challenge match at Cayon yesterday.

Francois stroked an unbeaten 54 while Harper hit a similar score as the Windwards, resuming at 50 for one overnight, batted out the day to reach 228 for nine.

Francois defied the Trinidadian bowlers for 279 minutes, faced 193 balls and struck four fours, while Harper scored a polished 54 with eight fours off 89 deliveries in 224 minutes.

Part-time bowler Milton Dookeran was the top bowler with three for 62, while Varoon Samaroo had two for 61.

The match was eventually called off with seven of the mandatory overs remaining.
