Jamaica crush Guyana - Victory leaves title race wide open
published: Wednesday | August 8, 2007

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (CMC):

Jamaica blew the title race wide open when they wasted little time in completing an emphatic innings and 50-run victory over Guyana in their TCL West Indies Under-19 Challenge match at the Edgar Gilbert Park here yesterday.

Resuming the third and final day at 99 for six, Guyana surrendered meekly for 150 - 24 minutes before lunch - as off-spinners Marlon Hoillette (three for 39) and Jamie Merchant (three for 34) handed Jamaica an emphatic win.

Fast bowler Jason Dawes, who did the damage earlier on Monday, finished with two for 26.

With the victory, Jamaica move to 27 points, while Guyana, the early leader, remain on 30.

Jamaica's march to victory was stalled only by a 25-minute rain stoppage with Guyana precariously perched at 138 for nine but, on resumption, they quickly wrapped up the match.

Solid knock

All-rounder Clive Andries hit four boundaries in a solid, unbeaten 30 in the only hint of resistance from the defending champions.

Guyana began the day still 101 runs away from avoiding an innings defeat and quickly lost Seon Hetimyer for 17, 12 minutes into the day's play when he patted a soft return catch to Merchant with the score on 109 for seven.

Kellon Carmichael joined Andries in sunny conditions and the pair, with sensible batting and good running between the wickets, added 21 for the eighth wicket.

Leg-spinner Nkruma Bonner broke the partnership when he removed Carmichael for five to claim his 17th victim in the competition.

Andries was joined by vice-captain Veerasammy Permaul (6) who was soon dismissed by Hoilette as Guyana slumped to 138 for nine.

After the rain break, Totaram Bishun inexplicably offered no shot to a straight ball on middle stump from Hoilette and was leg before without scoring, leaving Andries, who batted for 96 minutes and faced 49 balls, stranded.
