Jagdeo GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC):
President Bharrat Jagdeo on Monday urged Caribbean countries to lobby for a new framework to replace the termed "perverse incentives" in the current Kyoto Protocol.
Addressing an international conference on expanding bio-energy opportunities in the Caribbean, Jagdeo urged the region to "lobby for a new framework for the Kyoto Protocol which provides perverse incentives," to countries by helping reforestation programmes while ignoring those countries which preserve their own forests.
Jagdeo said while bio-energy and the energy security of the region "are critical issues," the Caribbean strategy must be located within the broader regional energy policy since it has strong links to agriculture.
