Leaders must be forthright
published: Thursday | July 26, 2007

The Editor,Sir:

The political leaders in our country need to be practical and forthright with the country and their loyalists who follow them on campaigns.

The joint statement that was made by both leaders did not speak to the common man. The statement was vague and too general in nature. Is it too much to state clearly in the strongest possible manner that, "If you kill, threaten, harass or intimidate anyone, we (the leaders of our parties) do not want your vote."

Further, the leaders of the respective parties must take full responsibility for the actions of their subordinates and followers. For example, if an incident occurs which violates the rights of someone from the opposing side, the leader of the party, not the subordinate, should publicly denounce the action. Just imagine what that would mean to the political atmosphere in our country. These politicians need to lead by example. Show the masses by their actions that they value lives.

Whenever there is a rally or meeting or a motorcade of supporters going to a mass gathering, there should be police escort, and perpetrators of crime arrested immediately.

If these simple measures are taken, I'm sure it will not only make for a peaceful election, but a much better Jamaica for all to be proud.

I am, etc.,
