CARNIVORE's delight
published: Thursday | July 26, 2007

Nashauna Drummond, Acting Lifestyle Co-ordinator

With a reputation of being on the list of top 50 restaurants in the world, Carnivore, in Nairobi, Kenya, is truly an unforgettable dining experience. About a 15-minute drive outside the congestion of Nairobi, Carnivore is a meat lover's heaven.

As the name suggests, carnivore is all about meat. Just about any meat imaginable can be found on their menu with the headliners being game meat, such as crocodile, ostrich, zebra and hartebeest.

An adventurous streak

The meat is roasted on traditional Maasai swords (skewers), over a huge, charcoal filled pit. Waiters then take these skewers straight from the flames to your table and use a machete to cut chunks of meat on to heated iron plates in front of you.

Bring your appetite

To really enjoy the Carnivore experience, you need your appetite and an adventurous streak. Or just your appetite, because everything at Carnivore (that I had) is good. Chicken, turkey, beef, pork and beef sausage are extremely good. The sausage was my favourite as it was packed with spices and flavour. Then came the only adventure, my taste buds would go for - ostrich! Well-done, with the texture of beef, it was extremely juicy and flavourful.

However, the complete Carnivore experience goes beyond the food. It's the open-air ambience the spectacle of seeing how the meal is prepared and the grand finale of it? How it's served. So if you're ever in Kenya, make a trip to Carnivore part of your safari package.
