Amateurs replace NPL teams in Red Stripe Beach Futbol
published: Monday | July 16, 2007

The annual Red Stripe Light Beach Futbol tournament will have a new look this year as title sponsors Red Stripe have announced the shortening of the month-long tournament into a one-day event.

The competition, now in its fourth year, has been revamped under the name 'Futbol Utopia', and will now look to attract semi-professional and amateur players instead of the traditional National Premier League teams.

According to Red Stripe group marketing manager, Carlo Redwood, this year's tournament which will kick off on August 11 as a part of Red Stripes' Red Summer campaign is for "wannabe pro footballers, local celebrities and business leaders".

"These changes have been borne out of a need to create an event that is completely all-inclusive and one that caters to everyone," Redwood explained at the event's launch held at the Cuddyz Sports Bar recently.

Creating value and fun

"The ever-changing needs of the Jamaican people have prompted us to this year make the event one that is geared more towards creating entertainment value and fun for all," he added.

Another major change to the tournament will be its venue. This year's tournament will not be at Fort Clarence or the Sugar Man's Beach as in previous years, but moves to town, to the Barbican Sports Complex.

The one-day showdown, which is expected to see two games played at a time throughout the day at a renovated Barbican venue, will see 16 10-member teams competing for a prize of $1 million and the Red Stripe Light Trophy.
