Kwesi Mugisa, Staff ReporterThe top seeds will bow into action as the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Jamaica Junior tournamentmain draw serves off at the Eric Bell Tennis Centre at 9:00 a.m. today.
Having had the advantage of not taking part in the qualifiers on the weekend, Jamaica's Brandon Burke, Christopher Lawson, Adam Vaz, Winifred Wienbeer and Florida-based Simone Brown will be looking for a solid start to the tournament.
Matthew Rodriques was the last Jamaican battling for a qualifying spot to the main draw when the rain brought play to a premature conclusion at the Eric Bell Centre yesterday. One win away from that dream Rodriques was on serve 2-1 against Joel Samaha of the United States before play was interrupted.
In second round earlier in the day, Rodriques crushed fellow compatriot Dwayne Doyle 6-0, 6-0, while Samaha brushed by Jamaican Camarsh Crumbie 6-0, 6-1.
It was also the end of the road for Florida-based Jamaican David Russell, as he proved to be no match for Christopher King of Barbados, who won that encounter 6-4, 6-4.
In other games, Darian King of Barbados got by the United States' John Thornton 7-6, 6-1 and Diego Acosta of Ecuador stormed past Desta Sandy of Trinidad and Tobago 6-1, 6-1.
Mexico's Fernando Larrea-Gonzalez beat Seanon Williams of the Barbados 6-1, 6-4, while Tigre Hank, also of Mexico, beat Trinidad's Vaughn Wilson 6-3, 6-0. Luis Reye-Penalverty of Puerto Rico beat Canada's Zachary White 6-4, 6-2.
Before the rain delay, which will see games continue at 8:00 a.m. this morning, King faced Larrea-Gonzalez, Acosta was set to play Hank, while King was down to play Reye-Penalverty. The winners of those games will book a spot in the main draw.
