NOTE-WORTHY: Poor Fools
published: Monday | July 16, 2007

Poor Fools

Why does it take an election for politicians to be so generous? They are going to provide better schools, roads, water, electricity, jobs - you name it, they are going to provide it for the people. Which makes me wonder, where were all these things before the election? Wasn't it their duty to provide such social amenities to the people? Why does it take an election for politicians to provide for the people? I find it to be very insulting how poor people are treated by politicians.

The poor are also at fault too because they constantly fall for these promises. It's unfortunate that there's not a better choice because the current ruling and opposition parties, in Jamaica, are opposite sides of the same coin. No one is better than the other. "There should be a law that hold politicians to their word. Then again, that would never be because they would have to make it law, and that would be the day.

Please, do some research

I think some people are either so caught up in politics and the party they support that they tend to say things without really doing research. I do not know if Mr. P. Barrington Whyte has ever lived in Jamaica for him to come to the conclusion that Prime Minister Portia Simpson has been a minister in three ministries and that she has never done anything for any of them.

He also mentioned that her constituency does not have running water. Is he a Jamaican or just someone who spends his time reading comic books? Does he know that Jamaica is a land with running water everywhere?

Many times have I driven in Mrs. Simpson Miller's constituency and seen the constituents wasting the very same water that people cry for, but then again that is how we Jamaicans are. If Mr. Whyte did his research well, he would have been aware of the Prime Minister's achievements in the Ministry of Labour, Welfare and Sports and also in Tourism. Please, someone educate him.

Pothole headache

I was in your country in April of this year. My husband, who is Jamaican, and I were on vacation. After he picked me up from the airport, we drove to a resort called Rio Vista. What a disaster that was. It took us four hours to get to the resort because the road was so bad. The potholes were more like craters in the road. We had to crawl to Portland.

I was told that because of a hurricane two years ago, the road has not been fixed. Why does it take so long to fix major road ways? There are not that many roads that go around Jamaica and I am sorry to say that we will not be going to this resort again, even though it was lovely. Is your Government aware of this problem?

Please have this problem looked into.
