The Jamaica Constabulary Force says it is now confident the upcoming general election will be peaceful.According to Assistant Commissioner of Police Owen Ellington, the man in charge of security operations for the upcoming polls, there is reason to believe the elections will be violence free.
"Enough work has been done in the last several months to ensure that there is a reduction, if not elimination of violence, (on election day)," ACP Ellington told The Gleaner yesterday.
His comments came months after Police Commissioner Lucius Thomas warned of bloody polls. In January, the commissioner said the police had intelligence that there was increased movement of and stockpiling of guns in some communities, a claim also made by a number of political candidates.
But ACP Ellington said candidates and residents in political trouble areas have been working hard to eliminate the possibility of violence on election day.
"We have identified our political hot spots and we are paying special attention to them so we can have a peaceful election," he added.
But ACP Ellington declined to name the communities.
