World YWCA invades Kenya
published: Monday | July 9, 2007

Masai drummers and dancers welcome delegations of the YWCA from around the world to Kenya at the opening ceremony on July 3.

Nashauna Drummond, Acting Lifestyle Coordinator

Nairobi, Kenya:

The Kenyatta International Conference Centre in Nairobi, Kenya, was a kaleidoscope of colour, languages and culture during the opening ceremony of the World Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) 26 World Council on Tuesday, July 3.

Assembled by their respective countries, dressed in their national/cultural costumes, approximately 100 different countries were represented marking the first day of the YWCA's two-day extraordinary World Council meeting.

With singing and dancing, the host association, YWCA of Kenya, officially welcomed their international sister associations to Kenya.

The International Women's Summit (IWS) which is also part of the council will run from July 4-7. The focus of this council's IWS is HIV/Aids. It will bring together hundreds of positive women and partner organisations from around the world who are working on this issue. There is also a special focus on the feminisation of the disease.

The YWCA World Council business meeting resumes on July 9 and continues until the 11th.
