Take Ole King Cole in feature
published: Wednesday | June 13, 2007

Passing the stands for the first time in the eighth race over 2000 metres at Caymanas Park last Saturday, the lead is shared by the eventual winner NEUTRALIZER (No. 10, Oral Bennett), MAMBO (right, Omelio Francis) and SIR KISSON LAL (inside, Andre Martin)in a field of nine$170,000 claiming horses. The winner, an 8-5 second favourite, is owned by Z 28 and trained by Steadman Curtis. - Colin Hamilton/Freelance Photographer

MID-WEEK racing resumes at Caymanas Park today following a three-week break with two trophies at stake on the 11-race programme. The co-features are the restricted allowance III for the Valbert Marlowe Memorial Cup over 1800 metres and the $260,000-$230,000 claiming for th McKenzie Memorial Cup over 1600 metres.

Th McKenzie Memorial Cup has attracted only seven starters and indications are that the recent winner NIJINSKY'S WAR and CAPTAIN BONE, who was a beaten favourite in the race won by NIJINSKY'S WAR, will carry the bulk of the betting.

While others such as LIBERTADOR and SANTA ANITA GIRL (regaining form) are not without chances in a race of this nature, CAPTAIN BONE now has a glorious chance to recoup losses.

The former Red Stripe Mile winner was installed an 8-5 favourite to win over 1500 metres on June 2, but found himself outpaced in the backstretch an flying at the finish, was a length adrift in third of 14-1 winner NIJINSKY'S WAR.

Both renew rivalry on identical terms but the additional 100 metres of this race should be to CAPTAIN BONE's benefit. The American gelding, who now takes orders from Neive Graham, should score an overdue victory with leading jockey Paul 'Country' Francis aboard.

Valbert Marlowe Memorial Cup

Nine have been declared for the Valbert Marlowe Memorial Cup (non-winners of three) and from the looks of things, the winner should come from a group comprising OLE KING COLE, HEY TRAIN, AITCHEMESBEAGLE, SPECIAL CAT and the improving POORLITTLERICHBOY, who is coming off easy win over a mile in the fairly good time of 1:41.2 on May 26. The latter will have the services of title-chasing apprentice Omar Walker, who returns from a four-day suspension.

After careful consideration, the one best equipped to pull it off is OLE KING COLE, to be ridden by hot jockey Oneil Mullings for trainer Dennis Lee.

The four-year-old son of Royal Minister, out of Lady Sailor, was not disgraced behind PURE MUD in the Ren Gonsalves Memorial Cup over 2000 metres for overnight allowance horses on May 26, finishing 9 1/2 fifth. He actually ran better than his final placing indicated to turn for home three lengths third and was still lying third passing the furlong pole.

Before that, OLE KING COLE had no luck in running when finishing two lengths fourth to BELLAS GATE BOY over 1500 metres, a race in which he was hampered a furlong out and in the circumstances did well.

On that occasion, HEY TRAIN came from way back to finish just ahead of him in second, but this time things should be different. Coming back on the convenient mark of 52kg, I take OLE KING COLE to win from Wayne DaCosta's AITCHEMESBEAGLE (working well) and HEYTRAIN.

Other firm fancies on the card are MISS ATLANTIC STAR to win the second, SIR KUNJABAHARI in the fifth, PRINCE NATHANIEL to repeat in the sixth, STACKA in the eighth and COMMANDING LIGHT to catch PASSA PASSA in the 10th.
