England call up Hoggard
published: Wednesday | June 13, 2007

Hoggard

LONDON, England (CMC):

ENGLAND'S SELECTORS have called up seamer Matthew Hoggard for the fourth and final Test against the West Indies, but will have to prove his fitness before suiting up.

Hoggard, who has taken 235 wickets in 63 Tests, hobbled off the field during the first Test at Lord's with a groin injury and subsequently missed the second and third Tests at Headingleyand Old Trafford, respectively.

Once fit, he will replace the out-of-form seamer Liam Plunkett who finished with one wicket in the just-concluded Test.

Show for selection

"Matthew has been bowling pain-free for the last few days and he will play for Yorkshire against Northamptonshire in the Friends Provident Trophy on Wednesday," David Graveney, the chairman of selectors, said. "The next step for him then will be to bowl in the nets at Chester-le-Street tomorrow and show that he is available for selection.

"If he is fully fit, he will replace Liam Plunkett in our starting line-up for the next Test match. James Anderson will be our standby seam bowler and he will also play for his county, Lancashire, in their Friends Provident Trophy match against Nottinghamshire on Wednesday," Graveney added.

England lead the series against the West Indies 2-0 after a 60-run win at Old Trafford Monday. The final Test starts in Durham on Friday.
