Cricket World Cup 2007 items on auction
published: Friday | June 8, 2007

Sajoune Rose, Gleaner writer

Following Jamaica's failure to gain the expected lavish benefits promised by playing co-host for ICC Cricket World Cup 2007, furniture and equipment valuing millions of dollars used at Sabina Park, the Trelawny Multi-purpose Stadium and in the Local Organising Committee's (LOC) office will be on auction today and tomorrow.

These auctions precede the permanent closure of the LOC office in New Kingston, which was specifically incorporated to organise the Yellow Package that Jamaica received as co-host of the Cricket World Cup.

"We have a lifespan and we come to an end on June 30 and we are doing a closing of office and the assets acquired over the period need to be disposed of and the most transparent form of disposal is a public auction," said Pauline Nelson, communications manager for the LOC, in an interview with The Gleaner yesterday.

Items up for grabs

Among the items up for grabs on both days are metal detectors, office desks and chairs, 250 bar chairs, 60 bar counters, 150 television sets, opening ceremony costumes, standing fans, drums, refrigerators, among others.

Today's auction is being held at the C.D. Alexander Company Limited, 168 Harbour Street, downtown Kingston, while tomorrow's auction will take place at Sabina Park, South Camp Road, Kingston, using the George Headley Drive entrance.

In order to register, interested persons need to provide identification and $5,000, which is a refundable deposit for each sale.

Viewing for the auctions continue today and tomorrow starting at 9:00 a.m., while the auctions officially begin at 10:00 a.m.
